About the photographer

Alcir Navarro da Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to New York in the early 80’s. He studied photography at the Parsons School of Design. He is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

He then began his career photographing book covers for publishing companies. Soon he also began to collaborate with Brazilian magazines and newspapers including  Manchete, Isto É, Época, Bravo, Exame, Caras, Viagem e Turismo, Forbes, Jornal do Brazil, O Globo, Estado de S. Paulo, and Folha de S. Paulo. Alcir also published in New York newspapers and trade magazines. He continues to reside in Chelsea in Manhattan where he worked for Veja, a  Brazilian weekly news magazine for 16 years.  Today he is a freelance photographer.

His experience as a foreign correspondent took him to many countries, including Chile, Colombia, Cuba, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Spain, and Thailand.

In 2001, from the window of his apartment in Manhattan, he photographed the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. These photos were widely distributed in the Brazilian media.Alcir’s photographs have been included in the book series Best Pictures of the Year published by Folha de São Paulo newspaper, as well as in the Journal of Contemporary Photography. The photographer’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. His photographs are part of the permanent collection of the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in Sao Paulo  and he had a solo photo exhibition at the annual literary convention in Paraty, Brazil.
